A market is set up alongside the children’s playground in Kuirau Park every Saturday. Stalls open from about 7:00am. With a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables on sale, this is an economical and casual place to shop for the family. Tasty New Zealand specialties such as paua and mussel fritters are cooked while customers wait. Other stall holders sell fresh rewena (Maori) bread, baking, jams and preserves and a variety of freshly made snacks or meals that can be eaten in a napkin.

Free Family Activities - Soothing Foot Pools, Mud Pools and Children’s Playground
Visitors might take their reading material and napkin-wrapped snacks and enjoy a soothing foot spa in one of the thermal foot pools – a relaxing and luxurious experience at no cost.
Recently revamped, the rough earth on the children’s playground has been covered with a flexible surface for safety. Playground equipment includes the usual see-saws and swings as well as more contemporary twisting and climbing apparatus guaranteed to keep smaller members of the family occupied until parents are ready to move on. This playground is a non-smoking area.
Providing a marked contrast to the smooth lawns and manicured gardens of the rest of the park, bubbling hot pools wreathed in steam lend a surreal air to the adjacent area – a tangible reminder that Rotorua is at the heart of New Zealand’s thermal wonderland. Locals pass by without noticing but visitors are always impressed by the thermal activity so close to the city and available for viewing without fee. Pools are sturdily fenced and connected by a network of well-maintained pathways. The pools are picturesque but very dangerous. Protective barriers should never be breached and visitors should observe warning signs at all times.
A Saturday morning could easily be whiled away in Kuirau Park. There is ample parking space and plenty of room for children and adults to stretch their legs and enjoy a ball game, a picnic or a barbecue. Affordable family holiday activities in New Zealand don't come any cheaper.
